Justice Must Be Just
Ensuring our criminal justice system treats everyone equally and affords due process under the law is crucial to having a just system.
That means the punishment should fit the nature of the crime – no more, no less. It also means helping folks leaving the justice system find fulfilling work and the second chances they’ve earned.
These reforms can, and have been made while ensuring public safety is maintained. 2018’s bipartisan FIRST STEP Act is a prime example of what can be done when we come together on the common ground Americans share. Nearly 80 percent of Americans agree our system should focus on rehabilitation instead of punishment alone.
